Oprah Winfrey And Gayle King Rave About Broadway's Latest Hit

Indeed, the duo of Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King will not incessantly miss any hot broadway show running in New York City. Neither were they this time, for they had just been at a performance of Purpose, a new play that seemed to cover highly family faith legacy in its theme. Their equally glowing reactions say this is really one that ought to be seen.

Written by the Tony Award-winning playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and with direction by Phylicia Rashad, the play screened all about the Jasper family when a son’s unexpected guest brought to bay tensions long buried. It actually swept Oprah and Gayle, who were so serious about making predictions to the Tony nominations-ha! These are not two women who don’t know a hell of a lot about storytelling.

Of course, they were not the only ones who chimed in on the praise-fest, as other theater lovers flocked to the comments section after catching the show. “Such a good show. I love how all the actors actually have individual time to shine. Explosive with every performance. And the second act-whew!” said one such well-wisher, still apparently recovering from all the intensity. To which another user added, “Great play. Great writing and performances.”

But obviously, not everyone was leaping for joy. One critic described it as fun tearing into Oprah and Gayle’s extravagant living by tagging it “exhausting” to see them “shoving privilege in our faces.” Dissenters didn’t mind flooding the comments section with, “Girl, are you drunk? These people shouldn’t post the lives they WORKED for because YOU are poor?” Ouch!

Amid all the drama-onstage and behind-the-scenes-something is sure: Purpose is trending. Many confessed that they had already seen it twice, while one mentioned jokingly that the boss’s enthusiasm got them tickets. “When my boss told me she saw it twice already & wanted to go again I knew I had to see it.”

While those who enjoyed the show the most were replying, a few random commenters apparently thought it should be their shout-out to some obscure financial guru called #TRADEWITHFIONA01. Fine, not Broadway-related, and yet, Internet… That’s why it’s fun.

For all of the dreamers, this really is the aptly cited excuse for a trip to New York. One user pictured the heydays of Broadway and said, “I used to go to New York quite a bit when I was younger…I miss it so much.” Another already plans a personal visit: “I’ll be there in May! Already have my tix!”

If ever you are in the Big Apple-follow Oprah and Gayle: nab tickets for an emotional roller coaster, and perhaps good chance at seeing a celebrity or two in the audience. But look for photobombers (“Look at that guy in the back with glasses 😂”).

Broadway is alive as ever through the magic, and Purpose is proof of it. From powerhouse performances to sharp razor writing, or even watching Oprah just sink deep into bliss, whatever it is, this play is leaving its stamp. Who’s booking tickets?
