Sarah Jessica Parker Explains Why She Prefers Conversations Over Selfies

Sarah Jessica Parker released a big, very much true, truth bomb about how celebrities relate with the others, and the whole thing just made sense. During a recent interview on The Howard Stern Show, the Sex and the City star said she doesn’t do selfies with anyone who approaches her. She said it’s not about being rude to them, as she would rather talk with them. And honestly? That’s a breath of fresh air.

The picture was taken during the candid interview, showing Parker looking relaxed and chic in a black top, a pair of blue jeans, and a blazer. Blonde waves framed her face while the Howard Stern logo sat right in the background, awakening the candid chat wherein she explained her stance.

There was one airport incident Parker recalled; a woman asked immediately for a photo without any introduction. “We didn’t even meet. You didn’t even introduce yourself. What’s your name?” Parker replied. Instead of just powering through a quick photo, she suggested they talk first. “I much prefer to have a conversation. For someone to come up to me and say ‘Maybe this isn’t your best time, my name is Veronica, and I’m just here and I’m excited to see you.’”

And it turned out that comments section was full of cheers. One user called her approach “super personable and generous,” and complimented her on setting boundaries in a way that doesn’t seem unkind. Another user told their celebrity story about how they forgot to ask Jennifer Hudson for a photo because the conversation was that much fun.

But then, conversely, some were not entirely convinced. One stated that even while Parker’s method might be cute, it surely is not feasible for each and every fan encounter. “A quick picture with fans will go a long way and will serve many within a short period of time.” Another one pretty much told us that they think those real conversations are way more memorable than some blurry selfie.

One user gave a far more insightful answer, explaining that they approach celebrities by first giving positive reinforcement for their work—never immediately asking for a photo. “The response is overwhelmingly positive,” they said. “I’ll take a photo in my brain and have the memory forever.”

And Parker’s whole intent: It is about refusing selfies as a way to reclaim the little humanity that remains, as celebrities are often treated like walking photo ops. A fan said, “She’s a regular human like most of us… Manners, social etiquette, proximity, privacy—the basic 101’s are still required in any meeting.”

And yes, the woman had a point. Now imagine being stopped countless times for pictures without so much as a simple “hello.” It’d be tiring. One commenter puts it nicely, “Authentic and human. Good for her! More than just a Movie Star. She’s a Person.”

Undoubtedly, the take-home message from Parker’s escapades is the sincere reassurance that celebs are, indeed, human. They have good days, bad days, and-Never-Known-Might-Actually-Sometimes-Make-A-Real-Conversation-Greater-Than-A-Dash-On-A-Go. So maybe the next time you see a well-known face nowhere near a paparazzo waiting to snap a full-body shot, ditch the camera and offer a heartfelt “Hello” emanating straight from your core.

If nothing else, Sarah Jessica Parker enjoys her fans. She’s just very much about the conversation, and that’s a huge plus for everybody.
