Juneteenth became Instagram Famous from social media activity this year until one post injected raw energy into the celebration of unapologetic Black excellence. The Instagram account VII(N) provided a fierce and raw tribute to ‘Freedom’ by Kendrick Lamar and Beyoncé, captioned ‘Peace in Our Roots. Power in Our Blood. Let Freedom Reign,’ and let’s just say… the internet was not ready.

Almost in unison, the post became the rallying call for gatherings in honor of Juneteenth as an enthusiastic thrumming of responses filled the post from affiliates whose very spirit felt that ancestral connection. To quote a user, ‘This edit made our ancestors proud’—and the user is not wrong. There’s just something about the Beyoncé-Kendrick mix that really resonates with the celebration of emancipation. The clashing lyrics about defiance against chains over booming drumbeats were just enough to set the scene for Black liberation in thought.

Reactions flooded in to celebrate the holiday and appreciate the brilliance of the post. One user commented, ‘Dopest post I have seen for Juneteenth nicely done makes me want to drink the Wine!!!’ with ‘wine’ referring to the red drink customarily served at the occasion. Shortly thereafter, another comment popped up that expressed: ‘Power to the People ✊🏾 Happy Juneteenth ❤️🖤💚.’

Nothing shallow about those comments either, for soon there were historical debates to follow: ‘We’re The Southern Iroquoian! The Moors sold their prisoners to us…’ downhill very quickly into a complex discourse that calls into question mainstream interpretations of history. This is exactly what layered discussions around Juneteenth invite—celebrations coupled with serious reflections about the real meaning of freedom today, centuries down the line.

What interested me was how the disclaimer that the post made no ownership claim to the audio did nothing to stir the typical copyright hawk comment come-down that usually would accompany such a declaration and appear in a few hours’ time? Today, whole different story. ‘This edit is 🔥🔥🔥! Happy freedom day to all my melanated brothers and sisters!’ one enthusiastic bystander said. I couldn’t have expressed it better myself.

Real magic is produced here, beyond great edits and sound choice—let’s be clear: any clip with ‘Freedom’ soars higher. What really hits home is how the post captures two opposing narratives that generate Juneteenth: joy in emancipation and the prolonged realization of true equality. Comment section was a digital cookout, from several alive for the turn-up (‘makes me want to drink the Wine!!!’) to others deep with untold histories.

Moreover, as Juneteenth is being established into a federal holiday as well as a cultural phenomenon, surely more content like this will be on the rise. For if anything Beyoncé and Kendrick know—along with this post—Black freedom has ever been half rhythm and half revolution. Now: where that red drink at?
