Oprah’s Book Club Praises ‘Culpability’ As A Must-Read For All Generations

Promoted by Oprah Winfrey as the official summer read for 2025, and advocated as a cross-generational masterpiece that incorporates present-day issues involving technology and society, Bruce Holsinger’s “Culpability” did get that endorsement from Oprah herself, in an intimate conversation with the author on the Oprah’s Book Club YouTube channel.

In the video, Oprah went so far as to claim about the almost universal appeal the book had for anybody that is able to read and, under their own power, like novels: ‘No matter what age you are, if you can read and you like novels, this is going to appeal to you.’ She mentioned having given it to her daughters who were in their twenties and they loved it just as much. ‘I don’t know anybody who’s going to read this book who isn’t going to be fascinated by it, which makes this absolutely a must-read for everyone.’
The post generated various reactions from followers, many of whom were excited to be part of the discussion. One had simply written, ‘I wanna get this book.’ Another offered an alternative: ‘If you want another powerful choice, consider Women Are Angry by Jennifer Cox.’
Most of the commenters, however, kept drifting away from the topic of books and literature. One user declared: ‘Am really at a low point right now… I really feel lost, Overwhelmed and completely drained.’ Then came a voice of comfort: ‘Hang on. There is always a solution to a problem. You are gonna be alright.’
With that, the discussion took a detour deep down the philosophical trail about books and morality, saying the only book that leads you to heaven is the Quran, while the rest lead you to ‘bad behavior.’ The long-winded peroration stood out in stark contrast to all the casual book recommendations and personal appeals.
Whether or not the comments contradicted each other, the excitement for “Culpability” was quite evident. Whether through Oprah’s star review or its contemporary relevance that sucked readers in, there’s one thing for sure; the book has been the center of a myriad of discussions, more than just about the content of the pages.

While ‘Culpability’ continues gaining popularity in being the new summer read, it is vivid enough that Oprah is still a mass cultural force. If you have been a die-hard fan of the book club for years or simply needed ‘Culpability’ to be your next read, well, grab a seat beside everyone as this title will be dominating in bookstores everywhere these next few months. And if one ‘Oprah endorsement’ is not enough to convince you to pick a copy, then the booming buzz from the comment section might do it.
