One of the funniest and heartwarming behind-the-scenes moments shared by James Gunn deals with how his real-life rescue dog became a sort of inspiration for Krypto in the new Superman film. The director shared the disorderly yet adorable story of adopting a dog named Ozou, who served as inspiration for the movie’s version of Superman’s extraordinary dog.

According to the filmmaker, Ozou was rescued from a hoarding case with more than 60 dogs stacked in a crammed little room. And since that poor dog had never had any human contact, Gunn was immediately drawn to how strange he looked-this was very much due to the fact that one of his ears was up! But things got pretty rough between Gunn and his new rescue. The dog went on to tear through everything, from shoes to a $10,000 laptop, and would even attack his feet while he was on the phone.

Gunn recalled that he found the only way out was to stand on the kitchen counters while trying to keep a straight face during work calls. He thought of how absurd it would be if this dog had superpowers. So, through comic-book magic and a little chaos infused from his real-life experience as a caregiver for a very tricky dog, Krypto got into the picture.

Fans praised Gunn for his creative genius in the comment section and expressed renewed enthusiasm for superhero films in Gunn’s hands. One fan said, “There’s finally an artist running the DC movies. I was ready to be done with superheroes—now I’m excited.” Another commented, “James Gunn is a visionary,” in regards to the director’s ability to mix personal, relatable elements into grand, large-scale stories.

Also, the very special bond with pets was a comeback theme in the comment section. One wrote, “We just lost our dog Hugo, but our new pup Oso has been our Krypto, helping us through the grief.” Others simply thanked Gunn for bringing Krypto to life in the film. One said, “I went home after the movie and just hugged my dog.”

That was not the only pure sentimental side of the reaction. Another bunch couldn’t really get over the idea of Gunn owning a $10,000 laptop one witfully remarked: ‘I’m more shocked that James Gunn has a 10k laptop.’ Meanwhile, a growing protesting minority debated Gunn’s choice in interpretation, mainly concerning his interpretation of Superman’s Kryptonian parents. ‘You made Superman’s parents evil? But the dog and a drunk Supergirl is good?’ was one critic, to which defenders responded that focusing on humanity instead of perfect godliness was a fresh and meaningful thing to do.

Leaving these discussions aside, it is clear that Gunn’s eye for a personal story continues to resonate with the masses. Whether it’s chaos that is pet ownership or heroism on some grand tone, his films have really touched deeper chords than ordinary superhero fare…and if Ozou’s misadventures are any indication, perhaps Krypto might now start stealing the spotlight.

That very success of the movie has been able to silence most of the doubts against Gunn’s DC reboot at the very beginning. One of the denizens said, “He was getting so much hate, but now it’s all paying off.” With the movie enjoying fame with audiences and critics alike, it’s clear that Gunn’s gamble of a movie about heart, humor, and a mischievous dog has paid off.

So, while Ozou made some irreparable damages to gadgets, this pup has also had his pawprints on arguably the most beloved symbol of the new Superman universe. Not bad for a rescue pup already standing on shaky lonesome chaos.
