Cynthia Erivo Sparks Controversy With Jesus Christ Role And Claw Nails

Randomly spotted just when signing the autographs at the pop-up interview premises, and Cynthia Erivo, the actress to star as Jesus Christ in the project, already seems to be an excitement dripping with concern. The internet went into its own frenzy: primarily judging her long, claw-like nails and debating on whether she looked more demonic than divine.

Let’s just get this out of the way first: the nails. People started trolling about them. User LP (🤘) straight-up called them “Wolverine hands” and asked if they were beautiful or not, while Chris Tenis said, “There is nothing appealing about those ridiculous claws.” How she wipes, on the other hand, was a much greater concern. Several people, including Harold and RCA, got intensely worried about the hygiene logistics. “She must have the dirtiest butt ever!! 🤢” one said. Surely, that was the track the discussion went on.

Then there is the vibe itself. Many others, including Mary Freas and Jane Doe, believed she was nothing like Jesus and more evil. “No one looks less like my lord and savior than her,” Mary had tweeted. Others were feeling those “evil vibes,” as did Ali. RiccRokk compared her to “Dave Chappelle doing a hybrid of drag and a white guy.” Ouch.

Some even stated she was the Antichrist or a demon. Sucherspiel from Freedom Matters accused Hollywood of mocking Christianity, saying it’s the only religion that gets disrespected like this. Meanwhile, Ashtronaut Girl jokingly said, “I’m fairly certain that is Mothman.” So random-wise.

Not every comment was negative, though. Boomtown, saying young stars get “tarred and feathered” for a paycheck, felt sympathy for Erivo. Then there was Stan Chilly Cooks, whose comment was just as blunt as it was dismissive: “That’s a guy.” Because, of course.

This role is controversial enough from the very moment its announcement, with a black woman for Jesus being a tumultuous issue all in itself. Then add the nails and the much wider reactions, and you’ve got an Internet firestorm on your hands. In fact, one way or another, Cynthia Erivo is not one to be ignored.

What next? More debates, more memes, and definitely more questions about those nails. At least people are talking about it. Mission accomplished? Maybe. But also… yikes.
