Through DCU Updates, a short promotional clip emerged: Krypto the Superdog was tussling with the putative cast of the yet-unreleased Superman movie, which, needless to say, churned THOUGHTS on the net. The film shared by Entertainment Weekly exhibits the canine superhero trading punches with David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult in what seems to be an informal behind-the-scenes moment. But some spectators were not exactly howling with laughter.

One user labeled the promo in so many colors that it was “the cringiest promotion for a movie I’ve seen in some time,” while another sarcastic comment went that the movie is PG-13 in theory but is, in fact, “targeting four-year-olds.” Ouch. Even the actors were not spared; one commentator lambasted an actor for his “fake ass face,” punctuating his statement with grimacing face emojis.

But some parents did have a few bright moments. Some saw through and defended it as “just a little cute marketing,” and another complimented the cast for their looks. Then followed a strange argument about the watches worn by Corenswet and Hoult, with one individual becoming a full-on detective to find out the exact model of Hoult’s Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso. Because wristwatches are now officially a crucial element in superhero lore?

Then, of course, came the comments about James Gunn, with not much good to say. One bafflingly sarcastic comment suggested that the director “should try acting,” while the other, blending frustration and humor, said in Spanish, “Que te jodan, James Gunn” (that’s “Screw you, James Gunn” translated for you).

Inevitably, the debate over power levels between Superman and Krypto commenced. One user warns everybody that “the really crazy fans” are going to take this clip far too seriously and say: “So Superman isn’t stronger than Krypto? Yup, the movie is gonna suck.” Because, of course, the circus of superheroes always circles back to “Who would win a fight?”-even if one is a dog.

The clip itself is short; the reactions never stop. Whether you think it is cute or cringeworthy, what remains unquestioned is that DCU knows how to stir some buzz. And the film is still a good few months away, so this is probably the first of many 30-second promos that everyone online will look forward to tearing open.

So, will this be a golden moment in marketing or just another round of fuel for the never-ending spotlight nitpicking has put on superhero movies? One way or the other, it is working — for here we are, still sufficiently engrossed to talk about it at length. Perhaps that was the point the whole time.
