Jacob Couch Dies After Random Hatchet Attack In Arizona

It’s heavily drumming on the internet: Life of Jacob Couch, as shared all over the entire world by Libs of TikTok, after he met his end as a result of unprovoked brutal attacks. It reported the death of a victim who was at a bus stop with his wife in Arizona when he was struck on the neck with a hatchet by an assailant. An image of Couch was sent with the tweet, and indeed the posting had all the people on the Internet buzzing with all sorts of reactions-from grief to outrage to political pointing for blame.

What, though, really? It just comes in; what random violence has not petrified many people. Couch had not in any way been fighting: he was just… there. And now, he’s gone. Uncertain even the assailant’s motive, but that hasn’t deterred the heated online debates over race, justice, and media bias.

Most definitely, the majority replies were taking the turn into darkness. “Only thing that sub human trash deserves,” was the unrefutable declaration made by user SilentSentinel and linked it to an image of a noose. Like K.Moats, he was not alone in the opinion, “Eye for an Eye.. He deserves the same treatment.” Even as Henry Akeley decried, “Had he been racist, he would have been home alive and healthy.”

But not everyone was on that “vigilante” rhetoric. MJ Giorgi volleyed back in all caps fury, “OH! YOU ALL ARE SO FUCKING DISGUSTING! JESUS WOULDN’T EVEN LOOK IN YOUR DIRECTION TODAY!!” So unsurprisingly began the avalanche of clapbacks that included D-RockUnlimited accusing MJ of “supporting people who murder others for absolutely no reason.” Yikes.

Then there were the broad societal hot takes. Shreya pointed to systemic issues: “Arizona was full of homeless drugged-up psychos… It’s a cultural issue.” Brian MacLeod, meanwhile, went full media critique: “If it were a WHITE GUY that did this to an innocent Black guy… cities would be burning down.” Nothing new in whataboutism, but hey, it got the likes.

Among the noise, there were a few humane voices. Dr Jackson Michael truly grieved, “Very best with Blessings to his wife, who also lately lost their child.” While Wendy Stitt kept it simple: “My heart and prayers go out to the family.” Less rage can sometimes mean more.

Such uncomfortable questions now posed by this tragedy relate to public safety, mental health, and whether there would even be justice done. User louisa_katalina put it bluntly: “Should be a hate crime.” But defined by no clear motive yet confirmed, that’s simply speculation. And then there’s that very dark humor, such as Wangfist’s “Can we just bring back lynchings please.” Edgelord much?

One thing is for sure: this story is not going quietly into the night. Amidst raw grief and political grenades, the death of Jacob Couch has also become yet another flashpoint in America’s infinite culture wars. And while the hot takes keep rolling out, his family collects the ashes.

Rest in peace, Jacob. The world will not forget your story- for the good, or the bad.
