Having started this last month, Pride Month, as a heartfelt tribute for his Supernatural character, Castiel, it had stirred an explosion of love, heated debates, and chaotic trends on Twitter. Collins had posted an image of himself with the famous angel, remarking, “It’s day one of #PrideMonth. Proud of my old friend, Cas. Proud of you. #ForLove.” There was an instant barrage of support and hate against the issue of the character Lozanger sexuality.

From the very beginnings of the Supernatural fandom, arguments abounded as to whether Castiel, the angelic character played by Collins, was in any way coded as queer, especially with the intensely emotional relationship between him and Dean Winchester. Some fans see the final declaration of love as the confirmation, while others say angels do not have sexual orientations. And, oh! The Collins tweet was merely fuel to the fire.

One user retorted, “Cas wasn’t gay bro cmon!” then, weirdly, decided to inquire about the color of Collins’ underwear. Another replied: “You are such snowflakes lmao. Also, Cas was flaming since season 4. Sorry you’re in denial.” Messiness was further exacerbated by another who tried to scorn the Pride celebration with, “It’s no longer #PrideMonth it’s #VeteransMonth.” Not met very well, as many users pointed out Veterans Month is May.

Measures were taken into the ensuing traffic jams of oppression and devaluation, but mostly everybody else was loving this one. Our gay angel,” one person wrote, while another cried, “He woke up and chose to make history. Happy pride!!!” In response, a warm thank-you went to Collins for playing an angel who “can be a not sexless, unfeeling being, but deeply experiencing human emotions.”

There was also that one who just had to go there about Collins himself: “Remember when you accidentally came out as bisexual and then had to come out as straight?” Ah, Twitter.

The tweet got worldwide love, including Portuguese comment that means, “MY BEAUTIFUL CASTIEL, MY LOVE, I LOVE YOU.” Because nothing appears to unite people quite like a beloved fictional angel.

In reality, this little posting of Collins was another trivial and furtive kiss to a casuistic character with much-love from the LGBTQ+ community. In any case-whether you say Cas is gay, pan, or severely in love-there can be no doubt that he has done quite a lot for the image of genre TV. And if nothing else, the witty and humorous replies themselves do say one thing: The Supernatural show-line is very much alive and burning hot in seasoned discussions even after the final episode.

So here is to messy fandom discourse, to Pride Month, and to Misha Collins going about his business as our favourite agent of wholesome chaos. May the internet keep having explosive arguments but may that love for Cas and Misha never really waver.
