A lot of people today got the shock of their lives, especially anyone who ugly cried while watching Coco—Renée Victor, who portrayed Abuelita, has died. The studio paid her a big tribute on social media, dubbing her an “incredible part of the Pixar family” and assured that she would be forever etched in memory. With such a huge number of responses flooding in, she would surely never be forgotten.

Abuelita was not a mere character to Victor; she was the soul of Coco. The strict but spirited grandmother kept Miguel in check and once in a while would crack him with a sandal. Her voice carried all the warmth and humor needed, along with that unforgettable “No música!” It was enough to make it painfully real. And it hurts.
At this point, the comment section had become a cocktail of tributes, tears, and some controversial views. Most comments shared love for the departed, such as the one that said, “Now she can reunite with Mama Coco😭”- and that one really hits deep. Another one said, “We will remember her each time we hear a sad guitar😭😭,” confirming that Remember Me is an emotional trigger for all of us.
But obviously, some weirdos chose to jump in and poison the well. Some bright sparks suggested, “Thank god this means they cant make no damn sequel THANK YOU!!!” (I mean… yikes.) It got roasted fast, with replies like “Disney adult final boss Jesus Christ 💀” and “hey so read the room.” I mean, come on, guys.
Another user laconically quipped, “Pixar couldn’t find a good quality photo of granny 🙏🙏😭😭,” which ranks high in dark humor but was somewhat funny in a horrible way. The internet has its weird ways of mourning.
Nevertheless, at the other end of this chaos, there was love. People gathered from across the globe to mourn, one of them saying in Spanish, “Descanse en paz mama🕊️🙏.” Another from Japan said, “We remember her so that she may live forever in the land of the dead,” referring to Coco’s wonderful take on the living keeping together the dead through memory.
Victor’s legacy stretches beyond Coco. She was a magnificent actress whose decades-long career spanned TV, theater, and film. But to a whole new generation, she will forever be the voice of Abuelita; scolding Miguel one minute, dripping with love the next.
So, grab your tissues. It hurts. But if Coco taught us anything, it is that love and memory keep people with us long after they are gone. And judging by the online outpour, Renée Victor is not going to be forgotten any time soon.

Rest easy, Abuelita. And maybe be a little kind with that sandal up there.
