Russell Brand's Christian Awakening Sparks Wild Twitter Debate

Russell Brand just dropped the truth on Twitter, and now everyone is talking about-being talking here-we are talking, arguing, ridiculing, everything. The comedian-turned-spiritual-guy tweeted that after becoming a Christian, he realized he had worshiped ‘false gods’ such as the MTV Awards and comedy specials. And, boy-oh-boy-the replies blew up!

Brand’s tweet speaks of that emptiness he used to feel during his heyday; it now makes sense, thanks to his faith, he explains. But somehow, it doesn’t seem to have found everybody’s approval. Especially with the sexual assault allegations still ringing in people’s ears, some have said he is pulling redemption for all the wrong reasons. One user stated it plainly: ‘And suddenly the rapist is a Christian. 😆’ Ouch.

Then there were those in support of him, including Lisa Hanna, who said she relates hard, noting that she is also letting go of some old habits. ‘When the things you used to like start making you uncomfortable… I’ve found I’m looking for new music, new shows, new people,’ she wrote. Aww, wholesome. And then SootySec called, saying, ‘Think how the rape victims felt every time they had to see you paraded as a star.’ Damn.

Then came the skeptics: DVegasDave was unimpressed, saying, ‘If you were sincere about your change, you wouldn’t do it in front of a camera.’ Hu Janus took it even deeper: ‘Maybe that hollow feeling was the realisation of your behaviour towards others.’

The discussion did not end there; a whole theological debate took place. MtHelicon2077 sought details: ‘Which god or gods are you referring to? Please be specific…’ Meanwhile, Niz dropped history, explaining how the Bible was written way after Jesus’ time. ‘How confident are you that you actually know Jesus?’ Heavy stuff.

Some were chaotic: ‘GOD WILL NOT BE MOCKED….DEMONS,’ said one glaring user, capital letters included. Another said Brand was using the ‘Jesus angle to beat the rape charges.’ And a comment also told him to ‘Get the f’ over it’ and worry about Palestinians in Gaza. Just insane.

Slightly late but follow-up compliments; odd ones. Michelle Oberrender went on with some nice words about ‘Death on the Nile,’ while another prompted him to ‘Be Christ’ instead of merely being a Christian. Deep? Or just awkward? Your call.

Brand’s tweet did its job at the end of the day-get people talking. Whether it is genuine soul-searching or just a massive PDA, either way, the audience is watching. Above all, the scandalous polarized reactions prove that some are too angry to forgive and forget. Or maybe they’ve just had enough of seeing celebrities hide behind religion when it suits them. Thus ends the story, undefeated yet again is the Internet, wherein nothing escapes being turned into a battleground!
