Will Smith, Big Sean Tease ‘Beautiful Scars’ With ‘The Matrix’ Clip

Detroit rapper plays Morpheus in their rendition of the red or blue pill scene
Will Smith has dropped another breadcrumb about his upcoming single “Beautiful Scars,” which he’s been teasing with videos inspired by The Matrix. In the new trailer, he teams up with song collaborator Big Sean. The duo reenacts the famous red or blue pill choice Neo faces in the film, which harkens back to Smith originally passing up the role made famous by Keanu Reeves.
In the new clip, Big Sean portrays the Morpheus character (played by Laurence Fishburne in the franchise) to Smith’s Neo. “Look, you’ve made some awesome career choices your whole life. There’s only one you truly regret. Well, maybe two, but we’re not gonna focus on that one,” Big Sean tells Will, ostensibly referring to his infamous Oscars slap.
“So, I’m gonna give you a choice. Blue pill, everything remains the same, and you get to move on with your life. Red pill, you get to go back and star in that movie that got away. The choice is yours.”
After Smith contemplates the choice, he decides he won’t miss either opportunity. “Here’s the thing, I really like my life right now,” Smith says, before choosing to take both pills simultaneously. “Shit, that wasn’t even an option,” Big Sean quips. The clip ends with the release date for Smith’s new single “Beautiful Scars” featuring Big Sean, which arrives on Jan. 30.
Earlier in the month, Smith began cryptically teasing something new was coming from him with a different The Matrix-inspired clip, where he discussed that he had originally been offered the role of Neo, which he passed on in favor of starring in Wild Wild West. The first teaser posed the question: “What would The Matrix have been like with Will Smith as Neo?” The teaser had folks speculating that he might be starring in the new movie in the franchise, which will be helmed by Drew Goddard. As it turns out, at least with the latest clues, it’s likely a Matrix-themed music video for “Beautiful Scars” will drop along with the song.
