MTV Teases New Chappell Roan Song With Dramatic Taxi Fail

In consonance with chaos and charm of visual comedy, the event had gone gossip echelons. An image of the somewhat fair-haired one tagged bottom down sprawled behind a yellow taxi with expressions of shock and defeat had been posted by the network. The caption was: “Me, four seconds after realizing I should’ve taken ‘The Subway’ 🚕 Blessed to have a new @chappellroan song – and a new music video in the morning!!!” The entire overblown spectacle itself, loosing the grey suit, loosing the exaggerated expressions, spoke of purposeful absurdity, aligning almost perfectly with the vibe Chappell Roan wants to associate with this release.

The momentum behind the post stirred a fair amount of discourse, some of which threatened to give way to nostalgia, “I miss when you used to do rock videos,” while implying that MTV had drifted away from its gritty core. Another cheeky comment was: “Chappell Roan threatens to release music,” the inside joke about the artist’s rather inconsistent releases.
But real excitement is found among those who have actual knowledge of the new track. One overjoyed fan cried, “Oh my God! This song just came out and I’m already obsessed! @chappellroan you gave me good music again! Vocals! Everything!!! I love the influence of the band The Cranberries in this song!” To compare her work with another iconic ’90s band presents the idea that Roan exists somewhere halfway between a modern take and nostalgia, something that, apparently, really works.
But some were still not convinced: “Come on M, you’re better than this. Never forget the Chris Connelly days…” an allusion to the edgier era of MTV that, at least in the eyes of the throwback, should make the current vibe of MTV a bit too polished for certain tastes.
Some found the humor so off-the-mark that they’ve likened it to “Stand clear of the closing doors, please,” said one user—a public-service-announcement-like reply to the subway mention that was pretty funny in an unintentional, ironic way.

But undeniably, the post has been urging the buzz train to start chugging as the video is due to premiere very shortly. Whether it is the Cranberries-like voice, the ridiculous promo, or the ongoing debate about what MTV stands for these days, Chappell Roan’s latest is definitely getting people talking. And if these clips from the promo gesture anything, then that taxi mishap is probably just the beginning of one hell of a ride.
