Neil Patrick Harris Falls in Love With Lisbon's Charm

On Instagram, Neil Patrick Harris dropped a love letter to Lisbon. It was evident that the city and its people made a major impression on him. Talking about his first trip to the Portuguese capital, the actor gushed about the view from behind his hotel rooftop (the Bairro Alto Hotel, for anyone taking notes) and about the tiles the city is known for. Yep, the bright and colourful tiles, which most definitely were in the travel pics.

As it so happens, the locals weren’t letting him bask alone in the glory of admiration or even just the glory of being a celebrity. The comments were flooded with pride, invitations, and food recommendations. I mean, did he even visit Lisbon if Harris didn’t try a pastel de nata? One user even commented: Tell me you ate a pastel de nata?! Our favorite is from mantegaria! Well, spoiler alert: no answer yet, but oh boy, the pressure is on.

Messages flooded with reminders to go out of Lisbon to visit Porto, Braga, Algarve—name any city in Portugal, and a person in the comments was ready to play tour guide. One user tried to sell the idea: You should try Northern Portugal…very welcoming, authentic and beautiful, while another lobbied for the beaches of Algarve like a well-seasoned travel agent. Even the hotel joined in, congratulating him on loving their terrace and slyly flexing that the view is even better with great company. Smooth.

But the best one? Ocean fan who wrote in all caps, Só Barney was in my city…I can die in peace now. Iconic. There was also the obligatory LEGEN-wait for it-DARY joke hurled at Harris, as you knew there would be.

Meanwhile, a handful of other travelers trying to get travel tips had hijacked the comments. One person mentioning they booked a trip that covered Lisbon/Porto/Algarve had tips en masse, most of which were warnings like: stay the hell away and, of course, to try a Francesinha.

Harris was not just visiting Lisbon; it seemed his compliments caused a tourism campaign in the comment section. And if these responds are any indication, there’s indeed more than just tiles to see there. Well, those tiles are quite something, really!

So will there be another trip? Well, with an avalanche of You better come back soon, basically, yes. Porto next time maybe…and he can finally try that pastel de nata. No pressure, Neil!
