Russell Brand Slams Late-Night TV for Trump Obsession

Russell Brand has really gone and done it this time, delivering scathing commentary through a late-night show. It’s safe to say that there were myriad opinions about the situation. This actor-turned-commentator sent a tweet claiming that late-night shows have forsaken entertainment for a malicious tirade against Donald Trump. The replies? They were…something else.

“Late-night TV used to be about entertainment; now it focuses on vilifying and attacking Donald Trump over tariffs,” goes Brand’s tweet: Ahh, how classic Russell, instigating like it was 2012 all over again. But instead of an intellectual debate, the replies canonically descended into…uh…well, mayhem.

Very predictable really-the pile-on began. ‘You’re going to prison soon,’ said one user, referring to Brand’s legal problems. Another chimed in, “Did you rape anyone today?” The replies were dark pretty quickly. They were less about late-night television than scores to settle against Brand himself. Not quite the conversation he was looking for.

Most people, however, have had the misfortune of coming across some who would try to keep it on track. One fired back, ‘Late-night TV always mocked the people in charge; remember all the jokes about George Bush being thick?’ Oof. That’s a very good comeback. Another retorted, ‘It’s called humor, luv. A concept alien to you over the years…’ Burn.

Then came the conspiracy theorists. “They come after him hard-glorious like they did to Jesus,” one of them declared dramatically. Alright there, buddy. I guess we’re gonna tone it down right there.

A couple of them tried to bring it back on point, with one saying that late-night hosts should criticize those in power. ”The scandal was that they didn’t do it to the former administration,” the pundit said. Not bad.

But most replies, as it would have it, were decidedly dunking on Brand. User: “You’ve become a propaganda clown.” Another user said, “Sure, but they’re not out raping people so there’s that.” Oof.

What is the conclusion? Russell Brand tried to roast late-night TV while the internet turned around and roasted him. Agree with Russell or not, one thing is clear: Russell Brand is perhaps one of the most divisive figures. And they are not hiding it.

Not that it matters, but why do we always have to roast people on the internet whenever a Twitter debate happens? For a friend.
