Russell Brand's Holy Week Tweet Sparks Fiery Backlash

Twitter

Russell Brand’s tweet about Holy Week was vague enough to elicit all kinds of responses from social media, from jokes to insults and all points in between. The tweet said, “It’s Holy Week: A lot can happen in a week,” with a highly reddish selfie some saw as demonic while others took as artsy or just straight-up roasted the guy over.

The replies? Complete annihilation.

Richard King bluntly responded: “I’d tell you to say no to drugs, but damages have been done.” The gloves came off: No-holds-barred back was what many Internet users were prepared for: Many users went on to actually call out his legal troubles, one of them asking directly, “Aren’t you facing criminal charges for raping four women in London?” Oof.

The other responses weren’t any nicer. Harry Hopkins went in hard: “Do you think you will rape anyone this week or have you given that sort of thing up for lent?” That would be pretty much horrible. Then Johnny Latham chimed in with, “There’ll be no resurrection for your career.”

Not everyone was dunking on him, though. Some of his supporters were saying things like “Amen” and praising him for his spiritual journey. But they found themselves engulfed in a tsunami of derision. Frances P Detweiler then came along with, “Still pushing the religious grift, huh? It’s the last refuge of has-been celebrities and conmen.”

Then the weird ones came in. One said he looked “sick”; another said his lighting was “like a demon out of Hell.” One user just…mentioned Katy Perry. Classic Twitter.

As if in response, Nightwatch N8 poured the heat on: “‘Holy week’ is a Catholic tradition…NOT CHRISTIAN. BIG DIFFERENCE.” Vic Ferrari and cosams18 pushed out their own biblical interpretations that even looped back to Russell’s messiah complex.

So what does it all mean? Russell Brand remains an intensely polarizing presence on the Internet; for him or against him, he cannot cease to be the talk of the town. If he’s searching for redemption in truth or simply going with yet another disguise, one thing clear from the reactions is that his name still burns.

And hey, at least he inspired some pretty deep philosophical discussions in between the roasts. That must be worth something.
