Tahj Mowry Surprises Everyone With A DIY Buzz Cut And The Internet Can’t Handle It

Tahj Mowry just unleashed an Instagram bomb, and no, this was not a new project or some strange cryptic life update-this was given to us by his hair. The actual buzz-cut. In a rush of fleeting inspiration, the actor gained backlash-and shock-from a number of his followers when he took matters into his own hands (literally) and gave himself a buzz-cut.

Mowry proceeded to go behind the scenes while shaving his head, from his first moments of hesitation to the long-awaited reveal of the self-cut, “I have never done this before,” he laughs, raising the clippers. “I just woke up today and was like, you know what? I’m ready for my Shemar Moore, Wentworth Miller era. Natural vibes only.” The clip ran the gamut from gently and tentatively shaving away Mowry’s trademark curls to full-blown reckless abandon, all while cracking jokes and hyping himself up.
Sinkful of hair can give evidence that this was nothing like a trim. “Look at this mess,” he directs the camera. “There’s no going back now.” And really? He wasn’t wrong. They could never look back now. The buzz cut was narrowly paired with a neat beard by the end of it all. “I’m not mad at it,” he said as he looked upon the finished product in the mirror.
Those are pretty funny moments-he hadn’t told a single soul! Not one from his agents; not even his management or family. “They’re gonna find out when they see this,” he said with a grin. The only person who knew the secret was one of his best friends, who probably had some sort of secret he shared about doing wild haircuts themselves. “Shoutout to Hal for the pointers,” Mowry said.
The net, of course, had somethoughts. Somebody wrote: “Bro went from TJ Henderson to prison break real quick,” a nod to his iconic ’90s role. Another said, “The confidence??? I could never.” And honestly, so could I. Cutting your own hair is always a gamble, but Mowry just did it with such effortless swag that one forgets how nervous he initially was.
It was funny hearing the nitpicks and opinions through the footage with some lamentations mixed in here and there: “Oh no, what did I just do?” He even at one point got advice from ChatGPT about whether his face shape (oval, so they said) could pull off the look. Spoiler: It did. “ChatGPT said I look good with any haircut,” he said jokingly. “So thanks, ChatGPT.”
Curious timing. Mowry had just said he was with his family for the Fourth of July-a rare, cherished occasion since not everybody lives in LA anymore. “It was such a blessing,” he started to reminisce about the time together. Perhaps the buzz cut had some meaning? A refreshing new start? Or he just felt like switching it up. Either way, it was working for him.
By the time the video ended, Mowry seemed to be looking good for it and saying, “I feel accomplished.” He was rubbing his new baby head. Honestly? He should. Not many people can say they were able to buzz cut themselves successfully on a whim-let alone having a camera crew filming it for the world to see.
The comments came pouring in with praise for his bravery and jokes about jumping on the bandwagon for the DIY haircut. One said, “Now I wanna try this but I know I’d mess it up so bad.” Another one said, “The way you just went for it… legendary.”

Midlife crisis (In his words, not ours), or just a random Wednesday: one thing is certain-that boy knows how to keep it interesting. And if he ever decided to grow it back…? At least we’ve got the video for memory.
